Sweetbay magnolia
A graceful tree with elegant lemon-scented, creamy white blooms 2-3 inches across in spring. Flowers are followed by showy cone-like fruits that provide reddish-orange seeds to birds. Shiny semi-evergreen leaves turn bronze in fall. This cultivar has a more upright habit, improved cold-hardiness, and larger flowers than the species. A host plant for the Eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly.
Average to moist soil, sun to part shade, 15-35’ tall.
